My daughter has a very strange reaction on her tongue periodically, the papillae seems to fall off causing intense burning, pain and reaction to acidic sources. In researching this issue on the homepage of Yourcity.MD, I came across some interesting information from several sources.
The description calls this condition benign migratory glossitis. This is an oral condition where the tongue’s papillae (taste buds) spontaneously recedes. It leaves ‘patches’ that look like a map on the tongue. That’s why this condition is often referred to as geographic tongue.
The condition can be caused by family history, stress, allergies, zinc deficiency, and hormonal changes. Symptoms recede usually within 10 days, but they reoccur.
She washes her mouth with anesthetic rinse, or the articles say that doctors can prescribe a steroid paste.
